The NSN 5850-20-003-5024 Chameleon is a robust (high impact plastic), waterproof (to 100m), palm-sized (76mm long x 50mm wide x 30mm high), multifunctional (14 functions), light weight (112g/4oz), identification signal light. It emits visible and infrared light from nine light emitting diodes (LED) in a configuration of three visible green LEDs, three visible white LEDs and three infrared LEDs from behind a 180 degree angle viewing lens set into a matt black plastic and brass body with a spring metal clip. The body contains two tie-down holes for securing and the spring clip contains two key-holes for attachment to a universal mount.

A range of accessories designed to enhance the performance and utility of the Chameleon include a universal mount, head strap, trigger cap/trip wire, water activated cap, digital remote control, light shield and pouch. The lights can be remotely activated in multiple numbers to mark air landing grounds, LZs, DZs, beach landing points and other rendezvous or points that require identification. The lights can also be set up for early warning and to indicate when an individual has been designated by a lazer.
The Chameleon is powered by a commercial lithium 123A Cell battery. Functions are controlled by a micro-processor fitted to a circuit board that is melded into the light’s housing as a solid unit. Functions of the Chameleon are activated by rotating the bezel. The LEDs are Class 1 lazer safe in accordance with AS/NZS 2211:1:2004. The lights are intrinsically safe when operating within a hazardous environment in accordance with DS 00-35 (Test M-5)

The Chameleon can also be custom ordered with specific signatures and configurations to meet mission needs. This includes colour configurations, intensity, and viewing angles.  The Mockingbird feature can also be used to activate the light remotely by Laser or other high output IR devices to change its signature and confirm alignment. For sophisticated users an optional program can be purchased for use with a portable computer to communicate with the light to form light signatures and transfer data.
